GUIDE FOR ESSENTIAL TRAINING IN RESUSCITATION

In an emergency call for Help 000 AND ASK FOR AMBULANCE STAY WITH THE INJURED PERSON CALL FOR HELP AND RESUSCITATE!

ENSURE SAFETY for yourself, injured person and bystanders.

CHECK RESPONSE

Shake gently and shout a simple command “open your eyes or squeeze my hand – let it go”

CLEAR AIRWAY

If no response, roll person on side. Tilt the head backwards with the face slightly downwards. Clear the mouth of loose foreign material (leave firmly fitting dentures in place)

CHECK BREATHING

Look, listen and feel for breathing. If breathing present, leave person lying on side. If not breathing, turn person on back and kneel beside persons head.

TILT HEAD

Tilt persons head and support jaw at point of chin. Avoid pressure on persons neck.

BLOW

Place widely open mouth over persons slightly open month and sealing with nose with your cheek. Adult – Give 5 full breaths in 10 seconds.  Child or Baby – Blow gently until chest rises.

MOUTH TO MASK RESUSCITATION

If you have been trained in the use of a resuscitation mask, mouth to mask is an efficient alternative method of resuscitation.

CHECK AIRWAY

If the chest does not rise, check for airway obstruction, airtight seal, or blow harder. If the stomach rises, check airway. Do not apply pressure to stomach.

CHECK CIRCULATION

Check carotid pulse in neck. If pulse present, continue 1 breath every 4 seconds until breathing restarts. If no pulse present and if you are trained, commerce cardiopulmonary resuscitation.

CARDIOPULMONARY RESUSCITATION (CPR)

Adult
Place the heel of your hand on the lower half of the breast bone. With the other hand around your wrist, compress the breastbone 4 to 5 centimetres.
Child Or baby
Compress the lower half of the breastbone – Child – 2.5cm (heal of hand) – Baby – 1.5cms (2 fingers)
One operator CPR
15 compressions followed by 2 breaths – Adult: Repeat 4 times/min – Child/Baby – Repeat 6 times/min.
Two Operator CPR
5 compressions/1breath – Adult – 12 times/min – Child/Baby – Repeat 20 times/min

RECOVERY
Check for return of pulse and breathing after 1 minute and every 2 minutes thereafter. When pulse and breathing return, place person on side. Keep persons head tilted, jaw supported and face slightly downward. Keep person warm and stay until person taken to hospital.
